Welcome to UGC-MMTTC, University of Kerala. We are grateful to all our stakeholders for the encouragement and support showered on us.

INTRODUCTION

Established in 1987 in pursuance to the programme of Action of the National Policy on Education in 1986 when the University Grants Commission took steps to setup fifty Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres (erstwhile UGC-HRDC) in various universities/institutions in the country, UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre of the University of Kerala is completing 37 years of existence in 2024. The key concept of MMTTC is to strengthen the crucial link between teacher motivation and quality of education, and its broad objective is to improve quality of teaching by providing ample opportunities for professional and career oriented development of teachers.

It is universally accepted that teacher is pivotal in the education system, and has the role and responsibility of not only transforming the academic caliber of the students but also to orient them to meet the challenges of life as a competent citizen. Today emphasis is on improving higher education and sensitizing the system to ensure quality and accountability. The reformation and advancements in the domain of training teachers in institutions of higher learning are the results of an exhaustive stride towards academic excellence. Constant revision and improvement of curriculum, continuing efforts in the restructuring of courses and improving the quality of research which are ignited through Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres are intended to initiate a radical shift in the parameters of training the teacher project.

The UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre is functioning at the Golden Jubilee building of the University of Kerala which is situated in the sprawling 360 acre campus at Kariavattom, Thiruvananthapuram. This institution has been rendering outstanding service and has emerged as the premier institution of its kind in India on the basis of the number of Refresher courses, Faculty Induction Programmes, Short-Term Courses, NEP Orientation and Sensitization Programmes, Principals Workshop, Workshop for University Head, University Administrators, Interaction Programme for Research Scholars and other Academic/Administrative programmesorganised.

The MMTTC is equipped with a splendid array of infrastructural facilities including air conditioned and multimedia enabled classrooms, a well equipped computer lab with EDUSAT, INFLIBNET, DELNET and Video Conferencing facilities. University of Kerala is one of the biggest Universities in South India and the first University in the State with an MMTTC.

On the basis of the performances of UGC-MMTTC, University of Kerala, has retained no.1 position among all the 66 MMTTCs in India. This position has been maintained by MMTTC, University of Kerala, consecutively for the last 15 years by ensuring quality and training maximum number of faculty members.

The UGC- Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre has a vibrant exchange of resources with prestigious Institutions such as Institute of Management in Government, Centre for Development Studies, Rajeev Gandhi Centre for Bio-technology, Tropical Botanical Garden, VSSC, Indian Institute of Management, Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Science and other institutions in the field of Medicine, Information Technology, Science and Technology, Agriculture, Social Science, and Universities functioning at Central and State level.

Knowledge explosion occur in all disciplines without exception at frequent intervals which is to be addressed and acknowledged by the teaching fraternity. Teachers and administrators at College and University level need perpetual updating of their knowledge in the respective field of expertise to avoid the risk of remaining outdated and stale in a short span of time. The UGC-MMTTC of the University of Kerala fully recognizes its crucial role in comprehending and facing the challenge of the shifting paradigm of human resource development and academic research. The emerging notion of knowledge economy and knowledge society has luminously redefined the role of Universities and other academic institutions in a globalised context. In this context we recognise and undertake the noble task of motivating and equipping industrious teachers to enrich their repertory of resources and to keep themselves abreast of new knowledge, processes, methods and technique of teaching in a scientific and systematic order.

Functions of MMTTC

The functions of Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centreencompass planning, organizing and implementing Faculty Induction Programmes (FIP) for newly appointed college/university faculty members, Refresher Courses on various disciplines, Short-Term Courses on various topics, NEP Orientation and Sensitization Programme, academic seminars, workshops and other programmes for serving teachers/researchers/heads of departments/principals/officers/non-teaching staff etc.In the light of NEP 2020 particular attention is given for the conduct of NEP Orientation and Sensitization Programmes.

All training /capacity – building programmes for teachers /faculty/non-teaching staff in different areas being conducted under Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programmeshall be taken into consideration for fulfillment of the requirements as laid down in Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) as per UGC rules and regulations.

Academic Advisory Committee

As per the UGC-Guidelines,theMalaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre, have an Academic Advisory Committee with representatives from the institutions of Higher Education at the level of Vice-Chancellors and Senior Professors to take decisions with regard to academic, financial and administrative aspects. The Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala is the Chairman and Director of MMTTC is the Member-Secretary of the committee. All the academic, financial and administrative matters are placed before the Advisory Committee and the decisions there on may be implemented.

At the University level, we are proud to enjoy the unstinting support provided by our Vice-Chancellor, Members of the Syndicate, Statutory Officers, staff and faculty members.
