University Employment Information & Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau (UEI&GB), Thiruvananthapuram is a joint venture of the Employment Department, Govt of Kerala and the University of Kerala. It is established as per the National Employment Service Manual with a view to providing assistance to the students of colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala and other educational institutions with respect to the matters related to career and employment. It commenced functioning in 1959 in the Students Centre of the University of Kerala, P.M.G, Thiruvananthapuram. It is headed by the Chief appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala. The day-to-day functions of the Bureau are carried out by the Deputy Chief and other staff appointed by the Employment Department.

Present Chief of the Bureau is Dr. B. Hariharan, Professor, Institute of English, University of Kerala and the Deputy Chief is Sri. O. S. Sreekumar.

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram at present houses three institutions, viz, the Bureau, Model Career Centre and the PSC Facilitation Centre.

Major activities of the Bureau

• Collect and disseminate information on matters related to career and employment.
• Disseminate information on scholarships, fellowships, financial assistance available in India and abroad for pursuing higher studies.
• Render career guidance to students.
• Assist students for securing employment.
• Provide information on various competitive examinations.
• Conduct career guidance classes, seminars and career talks, etc. in educational Institutions especially in colleges affiliated to University of Kerala.
• Publish Employment Information Bulletin at regular intervals to help students in their educational and career planning.

Career Guidance Seminars

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram conducts career guidance seminars in colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala for providing authentic information related courses for higher studies as well as employment opportunities available before them. These seminars give attention on disseminating information on scholarships, fellowships, financial assistance, admission procedure of different universities/institutions, duration of courses, fees, employment opportunities available after completing the courses, etc. The seminars are handled by eminent faculties with reputation and proven record.

Coaching classes

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram also conducts coaching classes for NET/JRF examination, SET and other various competitive examinations conducted by the KPSC, UPSC, IBPS, Staff Selection Commission, etc.

Entrepreneurship Development Programme

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram conducts Entrepreneurship Development Programmes with the assistance of Kerala Start Up Mission for the youth with a view to inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship in the students and to encourage them to start self-employment ventures.

The programme focuses on ‘Start Ups’ and many participants have already started ‘Start Ups’ and some others are on the way to start their ventures.

Seminars on Emerging Employment opportunities

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram conducts seminars on emerging employment opportunities in the coming decades with a view to equip students to launch their career supported by new technologies such as Block-Chain Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Big Data Analysis, Robotics, etc. The programme is conducted with the assistance of Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC).

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram has a state-of-the-art reference library facility which caters to the need of the candidates appearing for various competitive examinations.

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram houses the Model Career Centre, Thiruvananthapuram also. It is a joint venture of Employment Department, Government of Kerala, National Career Service, Govt of India and the University of Kerala. This is a new initiative to provide career services and guidance to the unemployed youth with a view to providing employment to our educated, talented, energetic and vibrant youth in the private sector.

This Centre acts as a real exchange platform for the prospective candidates and the potential employers to meet each other in a conducive ambience. This Centre also provides a variety of employment related services to our aspiring youth to pursue a career of their choice according to their aptitude, interest and skills so that they can join the workforce with better skills. This is one among the 100 Model Career Centres started in the country and functioning in the University Employment Information & Guidance Bureau, Students’ Centre, P.M.G, Thiruvananthapuram.

Activities of the Model Career Centre

Skill Mapping: Model Career Centre, Thiruvananthapuram is undertaking job skill mapping for identification of right job for candidates. Candidates are assessed by the Career Counsellor through skill assessment and psychometric tests and guided to the right opportunity whether it is for employment, skill training, apprenticeship training, on-the-job-training, finishing course. etc.

Career Counselling: Model Career Centre, Thiruvananthapuram provides counselling services to the job seekers to make them aware of opportunities available based on their skills, area of interest and requirement. Model Career Centre, Thiruvananthapuram has individual counselling rooms, group counselling room and conference hall for this purpose. Government have appointed Sri.V.R.Rajesh as Career Counsellor for providing career counselling services.

ICT Lab: Model Career Centre, Thiruvananthapuram has a Computer lab with the required ICT infrastructure having 20 Desktop computers with internet connection facility and printers for jobseekers to access and update their profiles, submit application for jobs, access online career related materials, etc.

Placement Drives: Model Career Centre, Thiruvananthapuram is regularly conducting Placement Drives/ Job Fairs to provide employment opportunities to the educated and talented unemployed youth in the private sector. 25 Placement Drives/Job fairs and 4 Job Fairs have been conducted within the short span of 2 years since its inception.

Training: Model Career Centre, Thiruvananthapuram also provides soft skills training such as inter personal skills, intra personal skills, interview techniques, etc to job aspirants to make them readily employable. We also conduct mock interviews to build confidence in candidates to face interviews with confidence in the private sector as well as public sector jobs.

PSC Facilitation Centre

The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram houses a PSC Facilitation Centre for providing assistance to PSC exam aspirants from One Time Registration(OTR) to add higher qualifications to their profile. PSC has provided training to the staff of the Bureau to render error-free service to the candidates. This Centre is the only one of its kind in the district.
